Small Town, Big Deal - "Amana Colonies'

Here's another segment for my Amana collection. (Click on Amana in the labels to see my other posts.) This informative and interesting video has me wanting to go there more than ever. Very worthwhile to watch and it's just a bit more than twenty minutes. Thank you Susan, for pointing this video out to me! Susan Sevig, lives in Florida and is a great granddaughter of Michael Hofer. I especially enjoyed this video because there are people in it, who I've been in contact with via email: Lanny Haldy and Peter Hoehnle.

My favourite part of the video is blanket weaving. They're absolutely gorgeous and it only takes a few mintues to make one! Amazing, when you see all those spools of wool waiting to be woven into blankets - like Rodney Miller jokingly said in video - "Looks like a disaster waiting to happen." I wonder if they are as soft and cozy as they look.

My bucket list has two Amana things on it now: 1.) visit Amana, 2.) get a woolen blanket (can't decide between the brown plaid one or the red one on the loom - both are beautiful!)...providing I'll be able to afford it.

  1. Oh, the blankets look heavenly! Although we are in the 80's down here temperature wise, one of those blankets still looks wonderfully warm~

  2. Linda, I do hope you will get to Amana one day. You will enjoy it thoroughly. And just a small correction...I am the great-granddaughter of Michael Hofer. Thank you for sharing this video. Amana was a beautiful place to grow up.

  4. Shelley, In MB it's can get quite cold, so warm blankets are wonderful.

Thanks for pointing out the mistake, Susan. I've corrected it now.

  6. I'm going to watch the video now, but I think I've told you my boss at work (the library) drives through the Amana colonies on her way to either Minnesota or Montana or somewhere up north. She just raves about them and keeps telling me my husband and I need to go. They're about 5-1/2 or 6 hours from here. Let's you and I go at the same time and meet there!! :)

  7. Yes, I'm sure it would be lovely, if we could make it work that way. (:
